CGI Counter Scripts
If you are
building a professional Website, we recommend that you not use
a publicly viewable counter on your pages. Counters are often
associated with amateur sites. If, however, you do want a counter,
here is what Webmaster Techniques Magazine has identified as
the top three free counter CGI scripts:
1)
LogCount
3.8 (requires Server Side Includes)
LogCount 3.8 is pretty detailed for a simple counter program.
Not only can you have a counter, but you can also have a clock
that displays the time. The program is customizable, allowing
you to add your own counter graphics if desired. Best of all,
it will allow you to keep track of visitors without displaying
the counter, if desired! The program is also well documented.

2) VIP.COUNTER
(requires Server Side Includes)
VIP.COUNTER is a simple, but very accurate counter for
your Website. The accuracy comes from its ability to ignore
reloads (so that counter numbers can't be inflated) and the
ability to not count the same IP twice. Click

Jason's
Counter (requires Server Side Includes)
Some may find the instructions a little difficult, but the program
itself is very nice as demonstrated on the Jason's Counter main
